While other engines must deal with a fixed compression ratio, the VC-Turbo constantly adapts. It raises or lowers its pistons’ reach seamlessly, variably and continuously, to provide an ideal balance of power and efficiency for every driving situation.
Flexes for more muscle
When you press on the gas, the pistons move to produce a lower compression ratio. Similar to when a sprinter crouches to launch off the starting line, it results in instant V6-like power from this mighty 4-cylinder turbo engine.
Extends for efficiency
When you are cruising, the rotating assembly transforms to produce a higher compression ratio. And like the more relaxed stance of a long-distance runner, it conserves energy and increases your fuel economy.
20 years in the making
From drawing board to factory floor, Nissan engineers spent two decades researching, testing, and refining what would ultimately become the VC-Turbo. Their journey was fueled by a single question: Can you create an efficient engine that could transform into a turbo powerhouse and back? Their hard work and diligence provided the answer and delivered something truly unique – the world’s first production variable compression turbo engine.
Altima’s 2.5-liter direct injection gasoline engine
Altima offers two different engines, including a 2.5L, 4-cylinder Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) engine that packs some serious fuel economy with up to 39 MPG hwy.
XTRONIC CVT® (Continuously variable transmission)
Altima’s Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission) features wide gear ratio coverage for a more efficient drive. Want thrills instead? Dynamic step shifting simulates traditional gear changes for that familiar sense of exhilaration. Efficiency and excitement on demand.

Intelligent Trace Control reads the situation and, if needed, can brake each wheel individually to help you steer smoothly through the corners.
Hill Start Assist
Hill start assist helps stop you from rolling backwards by holding brake pressure for a few seconds, giving you time to switch from the brakes to the accelerator.

Available Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) keeps you up-to-date with the latest speed limit by detecting road signs as you go.
Intelligent Driver Alertness
Time for a break? Intelligent Driver Alertness monitors your steering patterns and if the system detects you might be getting drowsy and need a break, it alerts you with a chime.
Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)
When VDC detects over- or understeer, the system can reduce engine power and apply brake pressure to specific wheels.
Traction Control System (TCS)
TCS can sense wheelspin and responds by instantly reducing throttle, helping you regain available traction and maintain control of your Altima.
Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
Altima’s Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) rapidly pumps the brakes during hard braking to help prevent your wheels from locking, helping you maintain steering control.
Advanced braking
Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) sends extra force to the rear brakes when you have additional weight in the vehicle, while Brake Assist helps apply maximum force if it detects a hard braking situation.
Zone Body Construction
When a collision is unavoidable, Zone Body construction helps maintain the integrity of the passenger compartment with strategically placed crumple zones and other reinforced areas.
Nissan Advanced Air Bag System
The Nissan Advanced Air Bag System includes dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat-belt and occupant-classification sensors. Altima also features eight additional air bags, including front and rear seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags, roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags with rollover sensor, and driver and passenger knee air bags.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Easy-Fill Tire Alert
The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) lets you know whenever a tire is low. Plus, the Easy-Fill Tire Alert takes the guesswork out of filling your tires by a beep of the horn once you’ve reached the correct pressure.
LATCH and Snug Kids®
